I am fortunate to have had the benefit of many fine piano teachers over the years, and I relish the opportunity to pass the knowledge I have been given on to another generation of pianists, both young and older.
I firmly believe that anyone, given the right tuition, can become an accomplished pianist. I tailor lessons individually to each student, making sure to encompass a rounded technical, expressive, and theoretical education. I believe that fine piano playing is the result, like so much in life, of balance: expression is nothing without technique, but a solid technique is no use without being able to effectively convey thought and meaning through your playing.
I believe the power of example to be fundamentally important in teaching music, and I regularly demonstrate techniques and other musical ideas in my lessons, to aid understanding and learning.
You by no means have to take graded exams in order to progress unless you wish to; I teach many simply for the joy of playing, rather than exam progression. I enjoy teaching students of all ages, from children to people who have retired and long to learn, or are returning to the piano after years of absence. I do not believe that one is ever too old to learn the piano - it merely requires an individual approach.
Having a Diploma in Music Theory from the London College of Music, I am also able to teach music theory for ABRSM or Trinity graded examinations, and this can be done in tandem with piano lessons, or separately.
